What is Launch Control, and How Does it Work?

Launch control is an advanced driving assistance system found in sports cars and other performance-oriented vehicles that helps facilitate quick acceleration from a standing start. On the other hand, launch control is designed to produce the maximum amount of power and traction for a vehicle to accelerate from a stop as quickly as possible.

Many new cars have selectable drive modes available as Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. With the push of a button, a driver can adjust how a vehicle handles based on changing road conditions or preferences. Each mode is calibrated to alter gearing, throttle response, suspension settings, steering feel, and traction control. Launch control not only minimizes wheel spin but also helps manage torque, throttle, and gear settings to prevent vehicle damage. Without launch control, there is a higher probability of over-revving the engine and overheating the transmission.

Popular automobiles with launch control include the BMW M series, certain marques of the Volkswagen Group with Direct-Shift Gearbox most notably the Bugatti Veyron, Porsche 911 sport+ mode. Panamera Turbo, Alfa Romeo with TCT gearbox and certain General Motors products. Mitsubishi also incorporated launch control into their Twin Clutch SST gearbox, on its "S-Sport" mode, but the mode is only available in the Evolution X MR and MR Touring USDM. The Jaguar F-Type includes launch control. The Nissan GT-R has electronics to control launch but the company does not use the term "launch control" since some owners have equated the term with turning off the stability control to launch the car, which may void the warranty of the drivetrain. One version of Nissan GT-R allows user to launch the car by turning the Traction Control to "R" mode.
