What is an ECU/ECM module
ECU - Electronic Control Unit - is a computer responsible for controlling engine functions such as valves, turbo pressure, injectors and other components. The ECU is connected to all the control modules of the car to keep the car running properly. In many car models the ECU has other tasks such as air conditioning control, cruise control, power distribution to individual mechanical systems, etc.
What damages the ECU in a car?
The main reasons are several
- Short circuit in the wiring or in components of the engine.
- Voltage spikes, current spikes
- Breaks in the ground wiring
- Bad battery
- Wrong battery connection
- Overheating ECU - many ECUs are exposed to extreme temperatures
- Software problems - typical failure of modern vehicles
- Water damage
- Oil damage
How do I know if my ECU is damaged?
How can you tell if your ECU is having problems? Usually, the check engine light will come on at the first sign of trouble. This catch-all dashboard warning light is controlled by the ECU, and it will turn on if the ECU starts to malfunction
Common Symptoms ECU Failure

- Poor running condition of the motor
- Erratic idle
- Excessive fuel usage
- Engine turning off for no reason
- Engine won’t start at all
- Intermittent starting problems
- Connection issues between the ECU and the diagnostic scanner
- Overheating ECU
